Summary
Benefiting from successful achievements of the previous fluidized particle related EU-funded projects (CSP2, FP7) and Horizon 2020 (Next-CSP, H2020) as well as POWDER2POWER’s consortium’s highly qualified expertise, POWDER2POWER aims to demonstrate the operation of the CSP fluidized particle-driven technology in operational environment (TRL7) and at MW-scale advancing the technology towards commercialization.
The complete particle-based CSP system will be tested at the research infrastructure Thémis solar power tower premises in Targasonne (France) using an existing hybrid gas turbine with pressurized air used as a working fluid and high temperature (750 °C) particles as heat-transfer fluid (HTF) and a medium for thermal energy storage. The project will further examine the complete pilot system and its components and study the supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂) Brayton conversion cycle to improve the overall sun-to-power process’s efficiency targeting the commercial-scale applications.
