Preparing Themis Solar Tower for Powder2Power prototype installation and testing

August 1, 2024

The Powder2Power project is making significant strides in preparing the research infrastructure of Themis solar power tower for the installation and testing of the complete particle-based CSP prototype. This critical phase of the project involves multiple complex activities aimed at modifying the existing prototype configuration developed during the Next-CSP project (RIA H2020, GA n° 727762, 2016 – 2021) to ensure the research infrastructure is ready for advanced testing.

The WP3 team from PROMES-CNRS research laboratory has been working diligently to complete these tasks efficiently through meticulous dismantling and relocating activities of the power block components on ground level. Looking ahead, the team will focus on completing the dismantling and lowering process of the power lock components to the ground level and preparing for the 2025 experimental campaign. This campaign will feature a small solar loop atop the tower, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards demonstrating the operational viability of innovative CSP technology.

Let’s see some of numerous tasks completed!

  • Removing of the air admission of the hybrid gas turbine and its support

  • Removing of connection pipes between the turbine and the heat exchanger

  • A crucial step in setting up the experimental setup has recently been completed: disconnecting and relocating the turbine (~15 tonnes) from nearly 90 meters high!

We have captured an exciting moment of the turbine relocation process. Stay tuned for the upcoming timelapse video to see the action unfold!
