Launch of the EU-funded Powder2Power project

March 1, 2024

We are excited to announce the start of the POWDER2POWER (Grant Agreement n° 101122347) project, funded by the European Commission through the Horizon Europe framework programme, under the call HORIZON-CL5-2022-D3-03-01, focusing on Innovative Components and/or Sub-systems for Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Plants.

The project is scheduled to run from October 1, 2023, to September 30, 2027, spanning a duration of four years. It is strategically designed to contribute to Europe’s green and digital transitions.
The POWDER2POWER projects aims to introduce an innovative dispatchable solar energy solution allowing to efficiently collect, store, and convert solar energy into heat and electricity surpassing current commercial technologies. The project’s scope includes demonstrating the operation of the CSP fluidized particle-driven technology in operational environment (TRL7) and at MW-scale advancing the technology towards commercialization.

The research infrastructure Thémis solar power tower premises in Targasonne, France, will serve as the testing ground for the complete particle-based CSP system. The infrastructure incorporates an existing hybrid gas turbine with pressurized air used as a working fluid and high temperature (750 °C) particles as heat-transfer fluid (HTF) and a medium for thermal energy storage.
The project will further explore the pilot system, is components, and examine the supercritical CO₂ (sCO₂) Brayton conversion cycle to enhance the overall efficiency of the sun-to-power process. For future commercial-scale applications.
